Elite weightlifters carry record amounts of fast-twitch fibre
Thigh biopsies from World, Olympic and national-level US weightlifters showed about two-thirds pure type IIa fibres, the highest ever reported in this muscle.
What they studied
- Design
- Cross-sectional, muscle biopsies
- People
- 6 World/Olympic-level women, 9 national-level women, 6 national-level men
- Muscle
- Vastus lateralis (outer thigh)
- Method
- Myosin heavy chain typing, single fibre and whole-muscle
What they found
- On average 67% of fibres were pure type IIa, the highest ever reported in healthy vastus lateralis; 23% were type I.
- World-class women averaged 71% IIa, national women 67% and national men 63%.
- No pure type IIx fibres were found.
- Whole-muscle analysis overestimated type I and IIx compared with single-fibre analysis.
How strong is the evidence
Cross-sectional · n=21
What this design cannot tell us:
- Only 21 athletes and one muscle.
- A snapshot: it cannot separate talent (being born fast) from years of training.
What it means for your training
- Rapid force comes from fast-twitch fibre. Keep heavy and explosive lifts in your week.
- Calibre and years in the sport mattered more than sex, so long-term consistency counts.
